Abstract. Nitrogen (N) is a crop macronutrient of major importance, which affects both plant growth and yield. In this paper we discuss the humus content (%) and various soluble N forms (NO , total N, nitrate-N, ammonium-N, and organic nitrogen) available in humus sand soil samples originating from the Pallag Experimental Station of Horticulture at the University of Debrecen, Hungary. We found 45.4% nitrate-N and 13.8% nitrite-N of total N content present in the soil. Considering the percentage distribution of soluble N forms present at the Pallag Experimental Station, we recommend using this soil in further pot experiments, given that this has optimal nutrient supply capacity. In addition, we examined possible statistical correlations between humus% and N forms.

Abstract. Protecting soil fertility represents a fundamental effort of sustainable development. In this study we investigate how different altitudes affect soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and soil organic carbon (SOC), and their ratio, MBC/SOC in Hyperalic Alisol. MBC and SOC are well established and widely accepted microbial quotients in soil science. Our work hypothesis was that a decrease in MBC and SOC should be observed at higher altitudes. This initial assumption has been verified by our measurements, being attributed to the increase in MBC and SOC at low altitudes. Our approach should contribute to the better understanding of MBC and SOC distribution in soil and changes in MBC/SOC at various altitudes in the region.

Abstract
Soil respiration is a significant indicator of soil microbial activity; global soil respiration and decomposition processes release yearly to the atmosphere a total of 220 billion tons of carbon dioxide. Therefore, studies on the whole- or one particular aspect of soil carbon cycle aiming at optimizing agricultural carbon dioxide emissions or improving carbon sequestration contribute to a sustainable agriculture practice. In this paper we present the effects of biofertilizer application (Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus circulans, and Pseudomonas putida) on soil respiration in chernozem soil. Experiments were performed at Látókép Experimental Station, belonging to the University of Debrecen, Hungary. Additionally, we compare our results with findings of prior studies related to commercial NPK fertilizer applications (in four doses: N60P45K45;N120P90K90;N180P135K135; and N240P180K180), and two different cultivation methods (ploughed, loosened, RTK in rows, and RTK between rows); these investigations were conducted at the same experimental station. Our results indicate lower tendency for soil respiration, when biofertilizers are applied as compared to commercial NPK fertilizers, which enables to decrease CO2 emission in the environment. We also discuss a unit change in different alkali absorption-based methods (Oxitop andWitkamp) to facilitate comparability of recently acquired data with results of previous long-term fertilization experiments.

Energy density, reserve batteries
Dama Research Center limited
Reserve batteries supply power on demand, typically in emergency situations. In addition, recently, battery storage has been emphasized as an effective way to increase share of renewables in photovoltaic energy systems utilized in farming. The main advantage of water-activated batteries is that their electrolyte is supplied by the environment, where they get deployed; hence, only the typically light weight electrodes and battery frames need to be transported, rather than additionally carrying the aqueous electrolyte. While the specific energy of reserve batteries can be determined unambiguously, their energy density calculation needs a clear definition of the considered battery volume. In this project we develop Calculations of Specific Energy and Energy Density for Reserve Batteries

Abstract. Although iron is not contained by chlorophyll, it is indispensable for plants as it plays an essential role in the biosynthesis of chlorophyll. It is a component of many important plant enzyme systems, e.g. cytochrome oxidase, which is responsible for electron transport. Therefore, examining iron content of soils, particularly ionic forms of iron (Fe2+ and Fe3+) is important for fruit growers. In this article, we disclose the total iron content determined in soils (Hyperalic Alisol soil) at three altitudes of Amazonian rainforest in Ecuador. We examine how different altitudes impact the pH and total iron content in the selected study area. We found that total iron content significantly decreases (R2=0.966) at lower altitudes. For future studies, the authors recommend that along with Fe ion content one should determine calcium, microbial biomass, and microbial activity to better understand iron mobility and dynamics of iron uptake in the area.

Abstract. Presently knowledge represents a major factor for the development of a country’s economy. Although several methods exist to measure a broad range of entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurial activities on the national and international level, it should be emphasized that evaluating the level of innovativeness (innovation degree of the product and/or innovation level of the management) is a real research challenge tackled by public statistical services and private research institutions. Whereas the topic is relevant for both research and practice, prior papers in the literature are limited. Therefore, there is a real need for examining startup ecosystems, which constitute the most dynamically changing legal entities, and have an increasing impact on the economy. Startup mentoring has received a special attention lately in developing countries, such as in Ecuador, owing to continuously increasing governmental and private initiatives. In this study we analyze the innovative activity of enterprises enrolled in the Coworking StartUPS mentor program, in Ecuador. The concept of innovative performance introduced by Hagedoorn and Cloodt (2003) considers the number of patents awarded to companies. In present, the number of new products introduced to the local and international market is low (only 1.3% of local companies developing new products launch their manufactured goods on the market), and the number of patents owned by Ecuadorian microenterprises and startups is negligible. Therefore, we attempt to develop a new measure for assessing the innovative activity of local startups. For companies registered at the Coworking StartUPS mentor program we try to answer the question how innovative activity impacts the success of startups with constant monthly revenue. A straightforward critical success factor has been calculated by dividing the monthly revenue with the number of employees working at the startup. Next, the level of management’s innovativeness and degree of product’s innovativeness were determined. Finally, we calculated the total innovative activity using a self-developed index. In addition, we performed correlation analysis between the intellectual activity and the critical success factor.

Abstract. Background: An economically active population refers to people involved in any economic activity, such as agriculture, livestock, or industry. This activity can supply benefits to its owners and may generate the growth of small businesses. Our study presents a qualitative analysis of the egg production in Ecuadorian Andean communities (Tzimbuto, Bayushig “La Liberad,” and La Victoria “Pusuca.”)
Methods: Analysis was performed using a random sample of 81 hens and 29 eggs obtained from 65 producers, belonging to 50 farming families at the Utopia Community Fair. Zoometric characterization of the hens was carried out according to FAO protocols, and egg yolk quality, egg width and weight, and egg shell weight and thickness were calculated. The 65 producers were interviewed to answer questions pertaining to selling eggs, costs of production, and realized profit. The profit/cost indicator was calculated from the ratio of expenditure (egress) and total revenue of egg sales.
Results: 84% of surveyed participants indicated that they purchase eggs for their nutritional value, 12% because the animals are raised with organic food, and 4% showed preference for the eggs’ special flavor. The quality analysis of the eggs sold at the Fair demonstrated that the average weight of the eggs was 47.24 g; the length was 55.24 mm; and the width was 41.66 mm; weight and thickness of the shell were 4.90 g and 0.42 mm, respectively. The color of the yolk had a brightness of 57.62 L*, 5.53 a* for red/green tones and 47.15 b* for yellow/blue tones. The costs to produce the eggs for the Fair was US$0.21 with a profit/cost of US$0.04 per egg; the unit sale price is US$0.25.
Conclusions: 84% of surveyed participants indicated that they purchase eggs for their nutritional value, revealing the need to train the communities toward more efficient egg production.
